Undergraduate Students interested in participating in the Exchange program are required to follow the steps below.

  • Before you can start your Incoming International Exchange Application (Undergraduate), please meet with the exchange program coordinator at your home institution and request submission of the Nomination Form. 

    Nomination deadline for Fall Semester (August - December): March 1st

    Nomination deadline for Spring Semester (January - May): September 15th

    The Texas State Exchange Coordinator will review the candidates and confirm acceptance within a one week time period. 

Pre-Acceptance Steps

Please note that pre-acceptance steps (two applications and supported documents) need to be completed by the following deadlines:
Application Deadlines for the Fall Semester (August - December): March 31st
Application Deadlines for the Spring Semester (January - May): October 1st

  • After the Texas State Exchange Program Coordinator accepts the nominations, international exchange students need to complete the Online Incoming International/Exchange Student Application. To access this application, please click here

    Students will be required to upload the following documents to complete their application:

    • A copy of their passport
    • A current or most recent copy of their transcript (unofficial or official) 
    • Proof of language proficiency that can be demonstrated by one of the following:
      • TOEFL iBT – 78 (with minimum scores of 19 on each subsection and 18 or higher on writing section)

      • TOEFL PBT – 550

      • Cambridge IELTS – 6.5 (with minimum 6.0 score in all sections)

      • Letter of Evaluation from your institution certifying the university level English proficiency of the candidates

    Please be advised to enter your name exactly as it states in your passport.

    Please note: Incoming exchange students are exempted from paying the application fee. Therefore, please select the waiver option at the end of the application.

    Important Steps for completing a transient application:

    Log into and select “Create a new application now”

    • Select “create a new 4 year university undergraduate admissions application”


    • Under “Target University”, select “Texas State University (San Marcos)”
      • “Application Type” will be “Transient”


    • Select your target semester of entry, but note that the latest semester that we have applications open for is Fall 2021


    • Under “Major”, select “Exploratory”


    • From there, students will complete the rest of the application with their personal information.

Post-Acceptance Steps

Please note that there are no specific deadlines for post-acceptance steps, however, it is highly recommended to complete these steps within two weeks after receiving the official acceptance email.

  • After you receive the acceptance letter from Texas State University, we strongly encourage you to complete and upload the Course Selection Form via your Online Incoming International/Exchange Student Application, so that we can contact the appropriate departments for approvals, if needed. Please keep in mind that the approval process, especially for business courses, might take several weeks.

    For course descriptions, view the Course Catalog here and then check 'CatsWeb' to view course offerings and schedules by term. Below are detailed instructions how to view the courses by term:

    • Click here to view courses by term
    • After you select fall or spring semester (current year), you can select the subject and course level you need. Once you do so, you will find a selection of classes for a particular subject offered in the fall.
    • You can then select the class that interests you, by simply clicking on it. Once you do, a detail of the class will open, and you can see if the class has any available seats at this time. 
    • Please do not choose any classes that are online or at the Round Rock campus.

    Attention: Please complete the course selection form within two weeks after acceptance.

  • After being accepted to Texas State University, you need to request an I-20 Form. YOU WILL NEED TO BRING YOUR SIGNED I-20 WITH YOU THROUGH CUSTOMS AND AT IMMIGRATION CHECK-IN. 

    You will need to request I-20 via the International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) website

  • The purpose of this form is to help Texas State to be of maximum assistance during your education abroad experience. Mild physical or psychological disorders can become exacerbated with the stresses of life while studying abroad. It is important that the Exchange Program Coordinator is aware of any medical or emotional problems you have experienced. The information provided will remain confidential and will be shared with program staff, faculty, or appropriate professionals only if necessary to your well-being. Texas State may not be able to accommodate all individual needs or circumstances. This information does not affect your admission into the program.

    Please complete the Health Information Questionnaire via your Online Incoming International/Exchange Application.

  • After being accepted to Texas State University, you will receive an email with an assigned NetID. Your Texas State NetID is a number and letter combination and it is also a prefix of your Texas State e-mail address.  See the examples below.

    With your NetID you will be able to log into the Texas State Self-Service (CatsWeb) where you will have access to a variety of online services, such as checking holds on your account, viewing final grades, class registration etc.

    Before you can log into online services and check your Texas State E-mail (BobcatMail), you must activate your Net ID. Click here to create or reactivate your NetID.

  • Exchange students must complete the online New Student Orientation (NSO) before arrival - and follow Other Admissions Types category.


    Please create your profile for online NSO via


    Once you create your profile and reach the "Dates" page, please send email to and indicate that you are an incoming exchange student. The staff member will place you in the online session.

    Exchange students DO NOT need to the contact Academic Advising Center nor attend the on-campus NSO. These orientations are required for undergraduate degree-seeking students. Exchange students do not need to pay $60 for online NSO (fee will be waived from your account).

  • Texas State requires Bacteria Meningitis Vaccination for all students under the age of 22.

    Please click here for more detailed information regarding immunization. In order to meet this requirement, we strongly recommend to check your immunization records. If you have not received this vaccine, be sure to get this vaccine immediately after being accepted into Texas Sate - no later than one month prior to arrival - so you will not have difficulty registering for classes. 

    You need to submit your proof of vaccination to Magnus Health SMR. Acceptable evidence of vaccination may be found here

  • The Exchange Program Coordinator will notify you that you can proceed with course registration once you have completed the required online New Student Orientation (NSO) and submitted proof of meningitis vaccination.

    To register for courses, please go to and follow the next steps:

    • Click on My Registration & Class Schedule
    • Enter your NetID and password.
    • Select: Student - Registration - Registration/Schedule Changes
    • You can then enter your course # or CRN number


    Please keep in mind that some classes fill up fast and prerequisites may apply. Texas State cannot guarantee that you will be able to register for the courses that you wish to take. We strongly recommend you consider alternate courses as needed.

  • The exchange/international students are required to purchase the Texas State Health Insurance Plan while studying at Texas State University. Please follow this site for insurance deadlines and costs:

    Once you register for courses, you will receive an e-mail with information on how to enroll in and purchase the required insurance plan. Please have a credit card available for payment.


    Exchange Students MUST purchase the Student Health Insurance Plan and ARE NOT allowed to receive a waiver.

  • Once you have purchased your airline tickets, please enter your flight information to your Online Incoming International/Exchange Application (Undergraduate).

    There are three separate Departing Airline forms and two returning forms for each flight you might be taking during your journey to San Marcos, Texas. 

Important Information

  • Incoming exchange students are responsible for paying:

    Lodging $3,000 - $4,500 per semester depending on the selected accommodations

    Students living on-campus and with a meal plan, expect to spend an average of $1,600 per semester*

    Students without a meal plan, expect to spend $500 approximately each month

    International Operations Fee Exchange students are required to pay an International Operations Fee of $60 each semester
    Health insurance provided by Texas State University $650 - $700 approximately each semester
    Books $300 - $600 per semester depending on the required textbooks
    Personal Expenses $1000 - $3,000 per semester depending on the student’s personal needs
    Total Estimated Cost per Semester ($) $7,360 – $9,800

    *Students from Kansai Gaidai University, please select meal plan “250 meals/$75 Dining Dollars”

  • Students will be billed through Texas State Student Business Services (SBS). The student bill will include

    • the international operations fee ($60) and
    • lodging and meals (for students living on-campus)

    To view/pay your bill, please go to our Student Business Services website (SBS).

    You can pay your bill in full or in three installments. More information about payment deadlines and payment plan, you can find at

    *Please note that the student account will also show tuition and fees associated with registration at Texas State. These charges will be covered by Texas State Education Abroad according to the agreement between Texas State and the sending institution.

    Number of Covered Credit Hours 

    According to the Institutional Agreements, the undergraduate exchange students are covered for 12 credit hours (full-time status). Only students from the listed below partner institutions may register up to 15 credits:

    • Baden-Wuerttemberg Cooperative State University Mosbach/Heilbronn

    • Hogeschool Zeeland

    • MAUI-Utrecht Network

    • Université Rennes 2

    • Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez

    Any additional charges, not specified in the agreements, will be covered by the exchange students.

  • Online Housing Contract Submission and Dining Plan Selection

    Upon request and depending on room availability, the Exchange Program Coordinator may assist with on-campus housing reservations. Please note there are limited spaces. 

    All students residing on campus are required to purchase a meal plan. Students can select one of the three meal plan options. Click here for  more dining services informationPlease note that it will be important for you to know which one of the three meal plans to select before you apply online.

    Log into Catsweb, click on Students, then Texas State Student Self-Service - you will need your NetID and password. 

    • Select Student 
    • Select Housing and Meal Plans
    • Select Residential Life Housing and Meal Plans
    • Select Apply Online
    • Select first semester/term you are attending
    • Agree to legally binding contract terms
    • Answer contract questions (ADA, Living Learning Communities, etc.)

    (Note: To facilitate the process, exchange students are NOT required to pay $300 prepayment. This required payment will be waived temporarily from your account prior your contract submission).

    • Select Meal Plan (Required for all students living in residence halls)

    You will receive immediate confirmation for successful contract submission.

  • There are many off-campus options that are walking distance to campus and have a shuttle bus to and from campus.

  • Check-in Date(s)

    Official accommodation will be available for early check-in one week before the semester starts. Therefore, we do not recommend that you arrive in Texas earlier than one week before your first day of classes. The Exchange Program Coordinator will notify you in advance by email regarding the check-in date(s) for on-campus accommodations. Click here for more details about on-campus accommodations

    Students who are living off-campus, please verify the move-in dates with your apartment complex.

    Temporary Housing before Orientation

    If you decide to arrive earlier than the Texas State housing accommodations are open for check-in, the Exchange Program Coordinator may assist you with finding accommodations for your earlier arrival. However, you will be responsible for any and all costs associated with this temporary housing arrangement.

  • After arrival, exchange students have to attend the Welcome Meeting sponsored by Education Abroad and International Student Resource Fair Student Orientation sponsored by International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS).

    The Welcome Meeting

    The exchange students must attend The Welcome Meeting, which usually takes place one week before the semester starts and on the day of the early check-in into residence halls. During this meeting, students will have the opportunity to meet key staff members as well as other exchange students. Important reminders, as well as information regarding registration, will be presented. Students will also receive assistance with obtaining their Texas State ID cards and checking-in with the ISSS for immigration requirements. This meeting will conclude with a campus tour, a trip to Walmart and checking-in into your assigned residential halls.

    Check-in with the International Office

    During the Exchange Student Welcome Meeting, we will assist you with checking-in with International Student and Scholar Services. Note: all exchange/international students are required to check-in with International Student and Scholar Services to comply with immigration requirements. You will need to have the following documents with you: your passport, visaI-94 and signed I-20.

    Bobcat ID Card

    Once you arrive at the university, you will need a Bobcat card. This student identification card has many features. These features include:

    • Linking your Bobcat card to a Wells Fargo account, so you may use your card as an ATM card

    • Borrowing library material

    • Door access to campus facilities etc.

    After the Welcome Meeting, we will take you to the TX State ID Services Office so you can request your Bobcat ID Card.

    International Student Resource Fair

    The exchange students must attend a mandatory International Student Resource Fair sponsored by the International Student and Scholar Services. This orientation is usually scheduled one day after the Welcome Meeting. Please check the International Student and Scholar Services website for a specific date and the registration procedure.
